Anyone trying to bulk up will need to consume more daily calories, overall. You should eat enough to gain a pound every week. Look for more ways to take in more calories. After two weeks, increase your intake again if you notice no weight changes. Make the "big three" exercises a staple of your workouts. Squats, dead lifts and bench presses all build muscle mass quickly. These exercises will not only add bulk, but they'll also strengthen and condition your body. You should make sure that your regular workout schedule includes all three of these exercises or at least some variations on them. Don't keep your routine the same all the time. If you stick to a single routine, it may get boring and you won't want to do it. Arrange your workout to concentrate on different exercises to work different specific muscle groups each time you visit the gym. If you are able to do this successfully, you will not get as tired of your routines, and you will want to continue to do them. If you are going to train to be in a marathon or other event, don't try to increase muscles as well. Cardio exercises are excellent for overall fitness, but intense cardio workouts will interfere with efforts to bulk up your muscles through strength training. If you want to build muscle, focus the bulk of your efforts of your strength-training regimen. Use as many sets and repetitions as possible in each training session. Do fifteen lifts at the minimum with a break of a minute or less in between. This will enable the lactic acids to flow and stimulate the growth of muscles. Repeat this as many times as possible in each session to result in maximum muscle growth. Try to look bigger than you really are. Build up your upper chest, back and shoulders through targeted exercise. When you do this, your waist will appear narrower while giving the appearance of being larger than you actually are. If you want more muscle mass on your frame, get enough protein. Protein is essential to the maintenance and growth of muscle; working out without eating protein can result in loss of muscle. You may need up to one gram of protein per pound of body weight each day. Work opposing muscles at the same time by performing exercises that work the chest and back or quads and hamstrings.
